Charlie was playing with his local friends in our garden. They like to play with him because he has cool toys, a really rad bike (one that we know will never get stolen because it’s so unique that we will know right away it’s Charlie’s bike and whoever took the bike will have their hand cut off – a threat the neighborhood boys overheard from my crafty husband), and our garden is pretty awesome. My son, however, is a bit of an introvert. He’s outgoing and friendly, but he tires easily of social interaction. He’s been known to retreat even from us, his beloved family, much to the dismay of over-the-top-needing-to-be-connected-to-the-point-of-sitting-on-top-of-you Lola. Today, my husband had to go out and mediate because he heard Charlie screaming “Ma Salaama!” at the top of his lungs, over and over. Turned out that Charlie was tired of his friends’ company and they were ignoring his requests to leave. To make his point clear, he began to make it quite obvious that the time was up by shouting the customary departure salutation. Later we asked Charlie, “Do you know what ma salaama means?” “Bye?” No, Charlie, it means with peace.
