Frick A Sense

Posted by: whitegirl   in lost in translation, out of context

I have a challenge for you all. But first, back story.

The Mister and I are avid American Idol fans. By coincidence (?), it airs on Thursday and Friday nights, respectively. The new season just started, which means a lot of POH-tential for laughing at bad singers (I am one myself, so really I’m not being mean) and getting unexpected chills from voices that surprise me. The season over here in the desert is being sponsored by an Herbal Essences commercial campaign featuring a new, up-and-coming Arab singer from Egypt named Lara Scandar. The Mister and I have seen this commercial numerous times, and have debated each. and. every. time over what she words she is actually singing.

This is where my challenge comes in.

Rules:
1) Watch the commercial posted below (dang, I’m getting shut down if SOPA goes through). There is no limit to the amount of times that you can watch it through. Or freeze it. Or rewind.

2) Post your lyric guesses in the comments.

3) Resist the urge to use the powers of Google to cheat. I know the real lyrics; I’ll be very suspicious of those that are way too close. Because. Well… I’ll get to that later.

4) The winner, by my and The Mister’s discretion (we have a very scientific formula at the ready), will receive a prize of my choosing from the desert, to be delivered in the summer months when I am closer to a reliable postal service system.

***UPDATE**** in response to Di’s comment: YES, she is singing in English.

This reminds me a lot of the time when an Eastern European girls-only group released a song in English that went HUGE in Europe but didn’t make a lick of sense to any English-first-language speakers. And this is also why I will not be releasing my Arabic song titled “Frick of Sense” for which I utelized Google translate and got my new smash hit lyrics: Freek min m3e aneeha.

Yes! She is singing in English! I thought the same thing at first, too. I said to The Mister, “Maybe she’s singing in Arabic?” but my Arabic ears didn’t pick up on anything familiar either! Good luck!

Sorry, I tried to listen to the lyrics, but was distracted by the hot chick in the video. What was the question again?

Paige and I have decided that she’s not singing in real English. But here’s our best guess:

“Da, da, da…tell the fun it’s just aglow,
Yeah, yeah…see the colors in a row,
Oh, give me this one as your own,
All of you can hold the crown,
Yeah, yeah.”

Did we win?

“Da da da da ya da.
To the Fun that’s just so GLOW. (?)
Yeah eee yeah eee.
See the colours on the row.
Ohhhh ohhhhh.
Keeping this one as your own.
Yeah yeah.
All of you can hold the crown.
yeah yeah.”

And now I’m late to pick up my son from school. I better win.

This is what I got:

To the foliage is the glow,
See the colors all around,
Keeping this what is your own,
All of you can hold the ground.

After I typed this and reread it a million times, I think she’s singing to the plants, praising them for their beauty.
Now, since I’m in bed sick, I’m going to use my google-skills to see if I can figure out what she’s really singing. It will cheer me up. :)

K….after comparing Lara’s version to my version, mine makes more sense to me. Perhaps just because I can’t stop thinking about tropical plants.

chose the fun that shows your glow

Can we have more than one entry?

I am on a nightshift and she is making perfect sense:

To the floor, don’t just glow.
Steady I am.
See the colours in a round.
oh-oh-oh
Keeping this one is your own.
ya-ee-ya-I-ya
All of you can hold the ground.

So, I assume, (NA Culture here) she has a drinking problem she is concealing from her friends, (steady I am),
She is doing some sort of trippy drug, (see the colours all around…it’s gray outside lady…)
AND she is bragging about her great liquor escapades by telling her friends to hold the ground.

I only listened to it twice, but here’s my best guess:

Total fun that’s just so glow (huh?)
See the colours all around
Keeping this one as your own
All of you can have a crown

Now I’m off to go buy some Herbal Essence because that SOLD me!

Here’s what I think I heard:

To the blind/blonde that you’re so glow
In the eyes
See the conduct all around
Ohph Ohoh
Keep with this one, use your own
Yaa ee Yaa ee
All of you can hold a crown

Meh.

My guess:

Tell the fun that you’re so glow
Yeeedi-yi
See the colors all around
Oooh-a-oh
Keep it this what is your own
Yaa-ee-yiii
All of you can hold the crown
Yaaaayaaaaaaa

Nicholas guess:

Go have fun with a spring roll
See the colors of the road
Keep this one as your own
All of you can grow
