Come And Look At What We Made!


It was the first time I had ever made bread – I know!  I’m shocked too!  How could I have gone this long with all the success in the kitchen without ever attempting a basic such as bread?  But I had always felt intimidated.   Amazing what you can do when your hand is forced.  Lola’s reading program insisted that we make bread together to bring this week’s story alive.  In the story, the little girl, of nearly the same age as Lola, was tasked with kneading the dough for the family’s weekly bread needs, so we tasked Lola with kneading the bread, which quickly became much to overwhelming for her – or for her mother, pained as she watched her struggle and worried that our 10-minutes-for-kneading was quickly running out!!! And there wasn’t a lot of consistent kneading going on!!!  Gah!!  I think that for a first try, even with the challenges, we did pretty good!  It wasn’t perfect but it was good enough for the tuna salad sandwiches I had planned for luncheon.  I couldn’t shake the nearly-fail feeling, though.  So I decided that the only course of action was to make ANOTHER LOAF of bread.  This time, I would allow the bread to stay in the oven for the full allotment of baking time.  I was fearful the first time of over-baking the bread, causing the crust to be miserably brick hard as it had been when I was in Mrs. Chan’s Grade One class and knocked my tooth loose on my lunchbox offering.  My first attempt at bread had been slightly doughy, but I was determined to make a perfect loaf of bread.  And I did it.  Are you surprised?  I kind of am.  But look!:


Oh, and looky here. There is tea, too. Dang good tea, too, if I may say so myself.

Charlie said to me today, “Mom.  You can make bread now.  Do you know what this means?”

*pregnant pause*

“Raisin bread.”

Our lives have been irrevocably changed.  If you need to pinpoint a specific time when our lives were altered forever, this is it.  Raisin bread.  Dang.  And tea!  Oh, daaaaang.
